: Tamil Rebels and authorities military personnel waged a ferocious conflict along the presence lines in northern Sri Lanka early Wednesday, killing 52 guerillas and 15 soldiers in the deadliest clang between the warring sides this year, the military said.
Other clangs Tuesday killed 10 Tamil Tiger Rebels and one soldier, the military said.
Wednesday's conflict broke out about 5:30 a.m. when Rebel military units overran the presence lines in the Muhamalai country of the Jaffna peninsula, north of the rebels' Delaware facto state, said military spokesman Brig. Udaya Nanayakkara.
Government military units fought back with little arms, howitzers and army tank fire, eventually repelling the Rebel assault and capturing 500 metres (yards) of rebel-held territory, he said. In improver to those killed, the combat also wounded 74 soldiers, he said.
